Tips
This is the most important point I can make to help you do well in class. Simply stated, doing well on the Final requires planning and implementing a strategy to do well on the Final. This is how you differentiate yourself from other students.
In general, students making the transition from high school to college are ill-prepared for the demands of a full college course load. Which school year is the most easiest academically in high school: 9th grade? 10th grade? 11th grade? or 12th grade. Exactly, 12th grade or senior year is by far the easiest academically (and socially) of high school.
A few, but important, reasons include the fact that most seniors have already completed almost all their required coursework and take minimal classes. Also, many students have already submitted college applications with some having already been accepted by the college of their choice. These reasons as well as others results in less emphasis on studying and more emphasis on coasting through the senior year. In short, the drive to maintain yourself academically just does not exist senior year and you lose some of your edge to succeed.
Before long, Fall arrives and the first semester of college starts. There is a lot of transitions going on in the first semester: eating, sleeping, studying, socializing, spending, etc. Most students have yet to find the discipline of living a balanced life and will concentrate immediately on the most rewarding activities: socializing. It isn't until the first round of test and especially the second round of test before the seriousness of coursework organization becomes painfully clear.
Now, I know I'm spending some time setting up this strategy. So here is the most important suggestion for how to "Plan for the Final Starting from Day One".
For science courses, this may translate into having all the material arranged in an organized fashion to be used as a reference. What makes this material unique is that you have familiarized yourself with all the information you've collected and can mentally map topics to their location in your collection of resources.
Arriving to future point in time, prepared for the Final with well-organized resources, requires a consistent behavior on your part. Consistent behavior is required to continually update and maintain the information you receive and you generate as you progress through the course.
