1. Know the Specific Exam Topics
Find out from the teacher exactly what grammar / structure will be tested. Know what key vocabulary and lexis are included in the exam content area. Be sure to ask about specific functions or exam sections to be included. Remember, the teacher wants you to get a perfect score on the exam.

2. Ask for and Attend Tutorials
Find out if there's a regular schedule of tutorials. If there isn't, ask to schedule them each week prior to the exam. Prepare your questions on topic areas and specifics you feel weak in or don't understand thoroughly. Also schedule regular attendance in listening labs, open study sessions or monitored learning resource centers with an attendant tutor or teacher.

3. Prepare tutorial sheets for self-study
When I tell my students to prepare a cheat sheet for the exam, you can just about imagine the looks I get. "Put everything on your cheat sheet paper that you think you'll need to know to get a perfect score on the exam. I advise, "for the areas you're a bit weak on include explanations and an example or two as well." Can't you just see the dropped open jaws and wide eyes? "Now", I add, "use your cheat sheet to study. Make sure to go over it carefully everyday - even several times a day if you need to." The cheat sheet is an exam preparation aid. It is not however, used during the exam itself!

4. Use Your Personal Learning Styles and Characteristics
Study Topic Areas in a manner based on your personal learning style and characteristics. Are you a Visual learner? Then you'll need lots of visual objects and study aids to help you.
If you're more the Verbal - Linguistic type of learner, then written materials and explanations or direct Teacher - Learner sessions will be of far more use to you. For those Musical - Rhythmic types, have your teacher or tutor help you to create some theme-based study aids which are based on this learning style preference. Grammatical structure, rules and vocabulary can be set to rhythm, rhyme, alliteration, poetry or even Rap music to help you to internalize your material. Don't be shy about asking your teacher or tutor to help you prepare study aids that are specifically tailored for you.
In part 2 of this article, we'll look at what kinds of study aids you can prepare for yourself or that an English language teacher or tutor can help prepare for you. We'll also discuss how to start a study and practice group, as well as techniques and keys to relaxation before the big event. Well, after reading part 2 you will - and be able to immediately apply them for maximum benefit.
