English Comp courses provide students the ability to write clearly and accurately, enabling them to better participate in the workforce and society, according to the American Council of Trustees and Alumni. With math, economics, foreign language, US government/history, science, and literature, the council considers English Composition a core course that enriches their education. Many colleges and universities require that students take at least one college English writing course as part of traditional and online degree programs.
Colleges and universities also base admissions on exams such as SATs, which include reading, and ACTs (American College Tests) that involve writing. International students who aren't native English speakers often are required also to take exams such as the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEF), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and, at the graduate level, Graduate Record Exams (GREs). After they're accepted to American colleges and universities, non-native English speaking students often participate in English as a Second Language programs.
The University of Southern California in Los Angeles has hosted more international students than any other institution for several consecutive years, the Institute of International Education report shows. For the 2009-2010 academic year, the institution boasted 6,585 international students from 112 different locales, according to a report on its website. University of Southern California students are required to take at least two English Composition courses. Depending upon how students score on placement tests, they might also have to take Introduction to College Writing or its non-native English speaker version, Introduction to College Writing in a Second Language.
Through the university's American Language Institute, international students who are non-native English speakers can take intermediate writing skills courses, as well as a course on writing for academic publication and dissertations. Fiona Long, a China native and Tulane University student, told a reporter for the student newspaper, Tulane Hullabaloo, that she benefited from the institution's English offerings for non-native speakers, even though she began learning English when she was 10 years old.
International students spend a lot of money on higher education and, according to the US Department of Commerce, in 2008 contributed nearly $18 billion to the American economy. Students from all over the world attending secondary education in the United States use family and their own monies for schooling at a rate of 65 percent of those specific students. In total, the reported noted, the principle benefactors of student funding for these students is outside the United States, with sources providing approximately 70 percent.
