English is a West Germanic language that arose in the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of England and spread into what was to become south-east Scotland under the influence of the Anglian medieval kingdom of Northumbria. Following the economic, political, military, scientific, cultural, and colonial influence of Great Britain and the United Kingdom from the 18th century, via the British Empire, and of the United States since the mid-20th century, it has been widely dispersed around the world, become the leading language of international discourse, and has acquired use as lingua franca in many regions. It is the third most natively spoken language in the world, after Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.
Historically, English originated from the fusion of languages and dialects, now collectively termed Old English, which were brought to the eastern coast of Great Britain by Germanic (Anglo-Saxon) settlers by the 5th century – with the word English being derived from the name of the Angles.
The language was further influenced by the Old Norse language due to Viking invasions in the 8th and 9th centuries.
The Norman conquest of England in the 11th century gave rise to heavy borrowings from Norman-French, and vocabulary and spelling conventions began to give the superficial appearance of a close relationship with Romance languages to what had now become Middle English. The Great Vowel Shift that began in the south of England in the 15th century is one of the historical events that mark the emergence of Modern English from Middle English.

Owing to the significant assimilation of various European languages throughout history, modern English contains a very large vocabulary. The Oxford English Dictionary lists over 250,000 distinct words, not including many technical or slang terms, or words that belong to multiple word classes.
Modern English, sometimes described as the first global lingua franca, is the dominant language or in some instances even the required international language of communications, science, information technology, business, aviation, entertainment, radio and diplomacy. Following the British colonization of North America, it became the dominant language in the United States and in Canada. The growing economic and cultural influence of the US and its status as a global superpower since World War II have significantly accelerated the language's spread across the planet. A working knowledge of English has become a requirement in a number of fields, occupations and professions such as medicine and computing; as a consequence over a billion people speak English to at least a basic level (see English language learning and teaching). It is one of six official languages of the United Nations.
One impact of the growth of English has been to reduce native linguistic diversity in many parts of the world, and its influence continues to play an important role in language attrition. In today's market English is an international language of business and communication, but lately its status in the Internet environment is endangered.
From the very creation of the world wide web English has been first and top language in the Internet environment and still is. It is not a secret that the Internet was created on the basis of English language, but Chinese is claiming to overtake this new global trend of the virtual world.
About 2 billion people are in the present world wide web; 42% of them communicate in English and 32.6% - Chinese. Considering the rapid growth of Chinese population (12-13 million each year), the number of Chinese language users increases, which in a time will exceed the number of English speakers.
And China manages to turn this situation into its own advantage. The Government has demanded to translate all English phrases and expressions used into the native language. Government has also forbidden using those English words in mass media, press, and websites. Argumentation: the use of foreign words lowers language purity. Only separate words and abbreviations are allowed to be used in separate cases on the understanding that translation and explanation in Chinese follows right after them. Breach of this rule will be fined.

Forming questions in English is especially difficult for many speakers of European languages because they have very little experience of forming questions in their own language.
In saying this I don't mean to suggest that Europeans lack a sense of curiosity and never ask any questions; certainly not. I mean that in the Romance languages of Europe it is hardly necessary to form a question at all because questions can be formed simply by inflection, which means the modulation or intonation or pitch of the voice.

And that means, in the present context, changing the meaning of what you say by changing the way you say it. Speakers of European languages normally do this by making the voice rise to a higher level at the end of the sentence. It's the ability to vary the pitch and emphasis of the voice that can make speakers of other languages a little lazy about constructing a question in English. You can't use inflection of the voice in English as a regular method: the structure of a question, the correct order of the words, is extremely important. In my opinion, the ability to ask a question properly is one of the hallmarks of a fluent English speaker. affirmative: a) I can say this in English.
question: b) I can say this in English? (with inflection)
instead of the correct, c) Can I say this in English?
If you use method b) people will easily understand you but they will simply think that you don't know or speak much English. We just don't use inflection very often in regular English. When we use inflection of the voice in English we are usually indicating doubt or disbelief. Affirmative: 'I ate four horses for breakfast.'
You are surely entitled to disbelieve this sentence, so you say,
'You ate four horses for breakfast?' quite correctly, and probably in a voice rising higher and higher.
And a question formed by inflection in English can be offensive. Consider this -
Affirmative: 'You're a doctor.' No problem.
But 'You're a doctor?' Using inflection in this context implies doubt or irony, which may not be what you want to communicate.
The correct way to form questions in English is complicated but not difficult. I have reduced the process to two key points. With a little practice you'll be able to form questions with the skill of a British barrister.

How can you perfect your grammar? Practice. Lots and lots of it. It is best to practice with a person who is already fluent with the language. Speak with him or her and share stories. Along the way you will find your English slowly but surely improving. To build up your vocabulary, try to read more English books. You will learn new words every time you open up a book, and you can use these new words every time you speak or write in the English language. Writing needs the most practice of all. Have someone who knows the language look at it or run it through an English writing check program.

While a tutor who is knowledgeable in English is a better teacher than an English writing check program, it doesn't hurt to at least try using one. Such a program could do much to help improve your grammar and enhance how you write in English. How can it help? Grammatical errors will be highlighted in red, spelling errors in green, while the program will highlight areas which it thinks can be further improved in blue. Why is it that some English accents are more valued than others?
Back in the 1950s, the only accent you would hear on the TV or radio in the UK would be a clipped 'BBC English' voice. It wasn't even received pronunciation, it was more like the Queen's English - regional or national accents were not considered acceptable for national broadcast.
Thankfully this is no longer the case - all English accents are considered acceptable these days, and we hear a wide variety of regional accents on a daily basis.

Rightly or wrongly, people STILL draw conclusions about you from your voice, making assumptions about where you come from, the level of your education and even how wealthy you are and what your potential in life might be.
It many not be fair, but as SOON as you start to speak, you are saying a great deal about yourself....and not just in the content of your speech. Your tone of voice and your accent - the very WAY in which you speak - is creating an impression with the listener.
You would hope that most people are open minded enough to listen to you and to begin to understand who you really are.
An interview, for example, or a spoken English exam; a telephone sales conversation, where all you have is your voice to work with: in situations like these it is VITAL that you create a strong first impression with a good voice and a clear accent. If the listener has to make too much effort to understand you, they will simply stop listening.
LEARNING AN ENGLISH ACCENT
But, I hear you ask there are so many English accents - which one should I try to learn?
When learning any language, I'd recommend learning the 'neutral' accent of the capital city. In the UK, that would be a neutral British accent, or received pronunciation.
Why? First, because it is the most easily understood English accent outside the UK.
Secondly, a regional UK accent mixed with a non-English accent can be very difficult to understand.
So how DO you learn a neutral British English accent? The key thing is, of course, to listen to native speakers.
Changing your accent needs MORE than listening. It needs observation too. Why? Because sometimes you need to look closely at what the mouth of a native speaker is doing before you can fully understand HOW to produce an English vowel or and English consonant sound in the correct, neutral English way.
Most non-native speakers of English can HEAR that there is a difference between their own accent when speaking English, and a native English accent. What they don't know is how to change the way they speak to produce 'English' sounds.
This takes careful observation and a little concentration, BUT, by focusing on the way individual sounds are produced, even strong accents can be reduced.
Consider the 'f' sound. Many Indian speakers find this difficult, and will either make a soft blowing sound, or will make a 'p' sound instead, so that 'fast friend' becomes 'past prend'.
Listening to a native speaker might tell them that this isn't quite right...but watching carefully will show them how to make that sound (Bite your lower lip lightly with your top teeth, and blow out. Put some sound into it, and it becomes the voiced V sound, which many Indians pronounce as a 'w').
ALL English consonant and vowel sounds can be explained in this way...meaning that ANYONE can choose the accent they learn, and can speak English confidently and clearly.

3). Make a group with like minded friends. You can form a group with your friends who are preparing for IELTS exam. It can range from intricacies in grammar to new flicks released in the town. You have to make a promise that you will not utter a single word in your native language during this meeting. If you don't know a word to express, spend time and try to express it in another form.

The title was actually what was asked to me by one of my best English teachers. I was flunking my English language class in high school because it was indeed too boring. The fact that I had to stare at the blackboard, trying to absorb all those lessons made me uninterested in the language. Besides, why do I have to learn English anyway? Unfortunately, we all have to. Studying is always the first solution that one can come up when it comes to academic problems. However, the problem relies with how the student is studying. A student who is reading a book while facing the T.V will never understand what he or she reads. When you study, use a room without any televisions, radios or other objects that can distract you.

Next, use the dictionary, the thesaurus and any available resources available to you. If you have a laptop or a PC, you can try using grammar checkers in order to correct yourselves if in case you want to improve your vocabulary. Read English books. Practice writing English sentences and then check it to see if you have improved. Make it a habit to list down difficult words that you might have encountered while in the course of reading a book or answering your English homework. Study hard and be a dedicated student.
Of course, success in your grades in English and all other subjects is dependent on how much you really are passionate with your work. But in any case, determination and perseverance can sometimes be the key to make our studies successful. Keep on reading English books when in doubt; you will learn a lot from them indeed. Also, do not limit yourself with the dictionary. You can also use the thesaurus, which will help you in finding the right synonym for a certain word.

For many people, English is a Big challenge. English seems to be a very difficult language to master with all its irregularities, exceptions and rules. English in reality is a very peculiar language. Problems with English
* Not Original Language - The spelling of a word may not show what the pronunciation of the word is. This is because English words came from many different sources. It is not a 'pure' language because English came from two main sources - old French, and old Anglo-Saxon, there is a very large vocabulary of words. Words with similar meanings may have come from both sources. For example, START (from Anglo-Saxon) and COMMENCE (from old French). * Abundance of Common Words - To become even just a moderately competent speller of English one has to memorise at least 3695 common words with exceptional spellings
* Spelling Patterns - English has 88 main basic spelling patterns, but they all have some exceptions. 88 spelling patterns have so many exceptions that they are not really patterns at all.
* Idioms - Native English speakers use a lot of idioms, that is - words used in a way which is not their obvious meaning. An English speaker may say, "I do not think much of bananas." Communicating is much more easier than actually understanding proper usage of English.

3. Communicate in English - Communication in English has many forms like - Speaking, Writing Letters, Text Messaging, Placing an Order, E-mail etc. There is nothing like communicating in English, especially when there are so many Forms to Communicate.
4. Use a dictionary - Using a Dictionary while Reading or even while watching English programme is helpful in improving Vocabulary.
5. Listening English music - One of the effortless and easiest way is listening to music anytime or while doing daily chores etc. It can help in getting used to the natural rhythm and tone of English speech. 12. Similar Words - Learning as many words as one can of one category, e.g. animal words can both expand overall vocabulary and make them easier to learn by forming links between the words in the brain.
13. Record your voice - Many people don't have much or any correction of pronunciation from a teacher so recording yourself and listening it makes it easier to hear whether you are really making the right pronunciation required.
14. Learn English From Internet - Many websites provide free and paid online Tutorials for improving English.
15. Take English language exams - It looks tough but taking up such exams reflects your mistakes. Even if you don't need to and don't want to or can't take a special course to study for it, paying to take an exam like TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS or FCE can really motivate one to take English studies seriously.
16. English Language Blog - Another Creative way of getting along with English is to describe your life and interests etc. on the net. People who might read will point out your mistakes and give you free suggestions.
17. Visit an English Speaking Country - Most preferably England or any one which is easily accessible, is the best option. Certain Holiday Packages are available and one can take an English speaking tour or activity holiday.

Here are the Seven Mistakes EFL Learners Make When Taking Exams
o Leaving Questions Blank
Many exams are based on the number of correct answers. Leaving an answer blank simply guarantees that it will be scored as "incorrect". It's much better to write in an intelligent "guess" than leave a blank. For this you might still receive partial credit for your answer.
o Trying to Cheat
Nothing grates an EFL teacher's nerves more than futile learner attempts at cheating on exams. Experienced teachers have often seen and uncovered more ways to cheat than many learners will ever know. Why risk the deduction - or zero for the entire exam?
o Not Asking Questions
During some exam environments, learners are allowed to ask procedural or non-content-related questions of the teacher or examiner. At any rate, if in doubt, ask. The worst case scenario is that the proctor will state the question cannot be answered. o Not Reading Exam Instructions
Instructions and directions are placed into exams to help you thinking as to what is expected of you in answering a particular section or bank of questions. These do you absolutely no good whatsoever if you don't read them. In the event you don't understand the directions, then raise your hand and ask for clarification.
o Failing to Bring Necessary Supplies
If I had a buck for every time a learner asked me for a pencil, pen, eraser, "white out", etc. during an exam, I'd be writing this from my yacht in Tahiti. You know you'll need these things to take an exam, why not be prepared with at least couple of pens, pencils and an eraser?
o Not Being Mentally and Physically Prepared
You should be relaxed and well-rested, have eaten recently (solid food, not junk), physically and mentally prepared for taking an exam. At the risk of offending dentists and parents worldwide, let me say that you can and should eat some candy or sweets at or near the start of the exam.
o Relying on "hearsay" Answers and Explanations
A few raucous learners might blurt out answers and responses to questions or problems before or during an exam. Don't trust it. This just might be a low-level tactic to elicit attention or help. It won't work. What you hear the vast majority of the time, in my experience, is wrong. Don't fall into this trap.

The International English Language Testing System or more commonly known as IELTS is the brainchild of the British and Australian. It is an international standardised test of English language proficiency. IELTS has effectively been granted the monopoly power when both the British and Australian home office made it compulsory for student visa applicants to take the test. IELTS is also used as a benchmark for skilled migration applicants. Students sometime even complain that waiting time is too long because too many people are in the queue to take IELTS.

The test fee is not cheap either. The test fee in the UK is priced at 110 sterling pounds per attempt. Test results that have lapsed for two years is generally considered as outdated by the immigration department and a new test has to be taken. However, no official figures have been released to show how big the UK English proficiency test market really is. According to anecdotal evidence, the similar market in Australia is estimated about 27 million sterling pounds. Archived records from the UK Department of Education and Employment also showed that British English language products were worth about 800 million sterling pounds in 1988. This huge figure is not surprising because most students will pay additional money to go for IELTS focused tuition.
On the other side of the globe, the Australian Immigration and Citizenship Minister Chris Evans have indicated that alternative English proficiency tests will soon be recognised for immigration purposes. Many other test providers welcome this decision. One of them is the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), which is designed by the Americans in 1964. Another new test provider, world-wide publisher Pearson, is also said to have applied to the Australian government for an official status. These competitors are very keen to bite off some market share of IELTS.
Australian Minister's decision is likely to be influenced by the fact that the Australian economy relies a lot on overseas students. The influx of Chinese, Indian and Iranian students are now at the highest in history. These emerging countries have fast growing economies and parents are now financially capable to send their children to Australia, UK and the USA for education. However, not all of the students would have chosen to take IELTS. It is wise of the Australian Minister to realise that by making IELTS the only option, it is likely to alienate potential overseas students together with the school fees they bring to Australia.
IELTS also came under some bad press in November 2009 in India. The British Council is responsible for administering the IELTS in India; however, their employees have been alleged to be taking money to sit the exam for others. Critics commented the issue here is because the British Council does not submit itself to any external audit. They also argued that unless IELTS is taken off the monopoly seat, these fraudulent incidents will continue.
I think we should seriously re-assess our approach to the English proficiency test in the UK.

The banking sector seems to be an area which attracts a lot of people to work in it as an employee as for the reason which maybe due to the security, the great prospects or the handsome salaries or all of them. A candidate appearing for PO exam needs to know the pattern of the exam. The exam is based on a written test consisting of two parts, namely, objective and descriptive. The objective part will consist of four sections- English language test, quantitative ability, Reasoning and General Awareness/ Marketing aptitude. These are the basics, along with, the exact paper is learnt when a candidate applies for the exam and in return obtains a 'acquaint yourself booklet'.
In the exam, there will be 225 questions on offer to be answered within 2 hrs and 15 minutes i.e., within 135 minutes. Approximately 36 seconds per questions. If a candidate is attempting about 175- 185 questions then its average. If he attempts greater than 190 questions with 90% accuracy then it is excellent!
Soto start with, I would propose to go for The General awareness/ Marketing aptitude section as there is less thinking business in it. All a candidate is required to do is just mark the answer by seeing the questions. Candidates are suggested to attempt as many as they can in this section but only if you are sure of the answer. This section should take a maximum of 25 minutes.
Following this section the candidate needs to jump on the English section. Here, generally, the first 10 questions will be based on a comprehensive passage. This part shall be ignored at first and the candidate should be able to solve the rest of the section which is very easy and is based on Basic English. This section will take 20-25 minutes.
Now depending upon the candidate's potential, he can either go for Reasoning or Quant but one should keep in mind about solving the easiest questions first and questions which require long calculation or time to think should be left over. If time permits then should be attempted. DI part in Quant is the easiest part and more focus should be brought upon this. Some questions can be orally solved which helps in saving a lot of time. So, candidates are requested to take special attention of these.
If Quant is attempted before then it leaves us with 45 minutes as Quant should be taking about 40 minutes. With 45 minutes in hand we need to solve 75 questions in Reasoning. Non-Verbal part in reasoning should not be neglected as there would be at least 15 questions belonging to it. At last there should be 5 minutes in hand which can either be utilized in solving the Reading comprehension in English or the questions belonging to arrangements in Reasoning.

Normally an English test contains reading and listening sections in order to assess the candidates' two basic lingual skills. Numerous researchers have been taking effort to improve the test materials to make the assessment more accurate. Despite the improvements, English tests are widely considered not reflecting the examinee's actual ability, much less trustable than those of other disciplines, such as mathematics, electronics.

One reason is, unlike other disciplines, in which the answers normally can not be found in the material, English listening and reading test materials contain all the answers. Candidates are required to find out the answers in English listening and reading tests but to think out the answers in other disciplines'. Often, to find out the answers doesn't need comprehension of the passage. First, in reading section, the question and answer choices (QACs) are accompanied with the passages, such that the candidates tend to search something in the passages for solution. As long as solution is found, reading is stopped. In many cases, comprehension never really occurs despite this section is often called reading comprehension. It is not strange that having passed IELTS test, many students found difficult to comprehend English materials in their study, since they didn't comprehend the IELTS materials either.
Many candidates often focus on QACs, rather than the passage. In many cases, some words or sentences in the passages will provide clues, hence a common way is to search the words and sentences and derive solutions from that. This process can be called information searching and processing (ISP). Although possessing under-desired comprehension ability, candidates can still obtain desired score by employing ISP. Because ISP can effectively help candidates obtain more scores, a lot of techniques have been devised to facilitate search and process the information. Candidates throughout the world are spending much time preparing for test by practicing ISP and score high in the test by applying ISP. Many even don't know what comprehension is, how to practice comprehension and/or consider comprehension is unimportant whatsoever. However, practicing ISP contributes little to improve reading ability.
As mentioned above, reading test can not truly assess comprehension ability. Assessed in this way for years since childhood, students gradually lost the true concept of comprehension. As ISP hinders immensely the candidates' ability development and causes the assessment inaccurate, it should be banded. Reasonably, if the QACs are handed out to candidates after passages, ISP techniques can not be carried out. This strategy can be called QAP (questions after passages).

The TOEFL tests all four language skills that are important for effective communication: Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing.
TOEIC measures the ability of workers to use English in business, commerce and industry. The qualification is also recognised by colleges and governments around the world. The TOEIC is a paper-based, multiple-choice exam that utilises audio, visual and written materials.
University of Cambridge ESOL Certificates are internationally recognised exams that are suitable for anyone seeking to improve their English, apply to a college course, find a good job, or simply travel abroad. How international students can SCORE HIGH on NEW English tests.
First step in your plan to score high on a specific English test is to understand the test requirements. Is the test a written test only? What type of answers are required? Students must understand how the English information is presented, what English skills are being tested, and how answers must be submitted.
Second step is to understand the volume of advanced English skills and vocabulary required to score high on these tests. Students must have studied and practiced English for 2500 to 5000 hours counting school classes and self study.
Students require a vocabulary of between 8,000 and 15,000 words to score high on the new TOEFL, TOEIC, AP, IELTS and Cambridge tests.
To score high students require all four English skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening), technical language structure knowledge (grammar) and the application of the grammar knowledge in the active productions of speaking and writing.

Everyone knows that cramming helps memorizing facts for a short time but does very little for the practice of the application skills. All new English tests are a combination of facts and the application of English skills including technical grammar knowledge. Students who only cram for tests will fail most of the new tests as answers require the application of English grammar skills. The students who cram can only help some of their factual knowledge if they can remember it perfectly. I have never met a student who can remember crammed English facts correctly.
Students become upset when they read questions they cannot answer, questions they cannot understand, words they do not know the meaning of, or "secret words" that occur in two or more answers.
Remember students that are prepared have less chance of becoming upset. Students that are rested, relaxed and arrive on time at the test site will score higher on the tests.

There are a variety of programs and courses that overlap each other. Many business English courses cover 90% of what students require to pass the TOEIC exam. Many advanced English courses cover 90 % of what is required to pass TOEFL, TOEIC, AP, IELTS and other English tests.

Only in her second semester of English, the "lights" still hadn't "clicked on" yet. Not a good university student across the board in her major, English as a foreign language was still her worst subject. She gazed around the room, at other learners' papers, at the EFL teacher and reluctantly, at her EFL test paper.

"Tap, tap, tappity, tap, tap". Luis Felipe Rodriguez* drummed on the desk, tapped his well-worn sneakers, hummed a Salsa beat and turned around to look behind him at the poster-plastered classroom wall for "inspiration". "Da, da, dada, da, da - dat, dat dada, dum." His English as a Foreign Language level two exam paper was still nearly blank. More than half the final exam allotted time had already passed. It he failed this exam too, he'd almost surely have to repeat the English level next semester. The Functional Needs of the Brain
EFL teachers should know that the human brain needs three key elements to function at peak efficiency. These are: oxygen, water (fluids) and sugar (preferably from complex carbohydrates). Both immediately before and during an exam, it's not uncommon to see English as a Foreign Language learners eating chocolate, hard candy, lollipops or even packets of raw sugar. I draw the line at chewing gum, largely due to its "tendency to wind up" stuck under the desks. It's because of the brain's need for sugars that I allow "eating" of high-carbohydrate and high sugar content "foods" before, during English as a foreign language exams.
Some Causes of Cheating on English as a Foreign Language Exams
When EFL learners openly or frequently "cheat" on exams, highly probable "causes" are typically one or more of these motivation-related factors which include:
o Lack of English as a foreign language grammar and theme study
o Poor English class attendance
o Failure to understand or apply English as a foreign language skills promoted in class
o Insufficient English as a foreign language skills practice / repetition to successfully internalize the skills and materials
